Sharper Reactions, Stronger Focus: Training a State Ice Hock

The Brain and Cognition Clinic recently welcomed Lachlan, a talented young adult goalkeeper representing Western Australia in state-level ice hockey. Marking the beginning of Lachlan's cognitive training journey to enhance his performance on and off the rink.

As the last line of defence on the ice-rink, Lachlan’s role demands lightning-fast reflexes, unwavering concentration, and the ability to stay composed under extreme pressure.

Following his cognitive assessment at our clinic, Lachlan commenced a specialised training program designed to strengthen the very mental skills that define elite goalkeeping. Through a series of comprehensive and structured drills, he is developing:

  • Reaction speed: to process plays rapidly and respond decisively to shots on goal.
  • Hand-eye coordination: to track the puck with precision and translate split-second decisions into controlled movements.
  • Body control and awareness: to maintain balance and execute accurate saves even when under pressure.
  • Focused attention: to block out distractions and sustain peak concentration across long, high-intensity games.

These gains are not limited to the rink. The same improvements in attention, focus, and mental agility will carry over into Lachlan’s everyday life... from better focus in his studies to greater confidence in managing challenges outside of sport.

At the Brain and Cognition Clinic, we empower athletes like Lachlan with the cognitive edge needed to thrive not only in competition, but in school, at home, and in life. His journey is just beginning, but the foundations he is building now will strengthen both his sporting performance and his personal growth for years to come.

If you can, please help us help Lachlan with his fund raising for his Youth Pan Pacific games in Ice Hockey here:

Feature Story on Chase Saxild - Go-kart racer

At the Brain and Cognition Clinic here in Perth, Western Australia, we have the pleasure of working with Chase, a 13-year-old elite go-kart racer with a passion for speed and precision. Over the course of 10 sessions, Chase participated in our specialised cognitive training program designed to enhance focus, decision-making, and mental agility.

The results were remarkable. On the racetrack, Chase demonstrated significant improvements: he became more precise in his manoeuvres, calculated his moves more strategically, reacted faster to changing conditions, and maintained heightened awareness during high-pressure moments.

These enhancements translated into measurable performance gains, including a race win — though unfortunately, a mechanical issue outside of his control later led to disqualification. Importantly, this setback had no impact on the strides he made in his racing skills.

But the benefits didn’t stop on the track. Chase also reported noticeable improvements in his everyday life, from better focus in school to increased confidence in tackling challenges. This case perfectly illustrates how cognitive training can support both specialised athletic performance and general mental agility in young people.

At the Brain and Cognition Clinic, we’re proud to empower our clients, whether athletes, students, or professionals to reach their full potential through evidence-based cognitive strategies. Chase’s journey is a testament to how targeted mental training can make a real difference, both on and off the track.

Emerging Collaborations

The Brain & Cognition Clinic (BCC) through its associated entity Perth Integrated Health (PIH)  has been working hard behind the scenes with its community collaborative partner the Alzheimer’s Research Australia (ARA) over the past six months.

Through the executive collaboration between Prof Vicky Vass, Prof Ralph Martins and our Founder Ian Wee – we have created a synergistic platform which seems the micro team of Researchers at ARA working with the macro team of Clinicians at BCC / PIH.

This is a first world collaboration where we will be introducing to the nationwide community the direct link between Researchers and Clinicians as we tackle and work with the scourge of our society which is Alzheimer’s.

In the beginning week of July 2024, we will jointly announce a new frontier.
