It is no secret that many adults currently up to the age of 60 are themselves converts to the method of play and learning through Lego.
For the Founder for the Brain & Cognition Clinic, Lego has been part of his method of self discipline, reflection, quiet time and lateral thinking for the past 55 years of which 40 includes his time as a practitioner. At a ripe young age of 60 he continues to build Lego in the Creator, Technic and Speed Champion series and has started dabbling in Lego Architecture while his two daughters are already converts to Lego City and Lego Friends.
With thousands and thousands of bricks at their disposal, the family have decided that it is time to share their Lego collection to create opportunities for others both children and adults.
Lego is not just about fine dexterity and control, it has a myriad of therapeutic components which discerning health professionals and parents have understood for decades. Take some of these advantages for example:
The all important aspect of PLAY which is also an important part of human development is of course not lost with these building blocks.
Here at the Brain & Cognition Clinic we adopt the LEGO Serious Play methodology which is a certification course designed for maximum involvement, flow, openness, creation, innovation, ownership and very clear next steps.
The essence of this approach will seriously change your world and the way you and your family will see it.
We have adapted the standard LEGO Serious Play methodology specifically for use within the mental health / disability sector, effectively a program that registered health professionals who have experience within the mental health & disability sector and in addition hold national / international recognised training and assessment credentials can utilise for their patients and or clients.
The Lego Therapy Club at the Brain & Cognition Clinic has a dual stream catering for children in the normative range of education and abilities and also a structured program that we operate within the NDIS for both children and adults. Participants need to be Plan or Self-Managed to be involved with these programs of ours if they are in the NDIS.
These small groups, run by a qualified OT are suitable for children aged 6 – 12. Children will be guided through builds and also provided with the opportunity to express their creativity.
